Qigong

Qi: “vital energy”
gong: “skill cultivated through steady practice”

WHAT IS QIGONG?

Qigong is the practice of cultivating vital energy by accessing, utilizing and managing chi through movement, sound, visualization, self-massage, intention, and breath. Qigong empowers the individual to take responsibility for protecting and improving their overall health and well-being, while offering tools to improve physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. The origins of qigong are at least 5,000 years old and many styles and forms exist; the styles that I offer - Zhineng Qigong and Radiant Lotus Women’s Qigong - can heal the body, mind, emotions and spirit.

What is CHI?

Chi (or Qi) is the life-giving, vital energy that is found in every living being and that which links body, mind and spirit. The concept of chi, or life-force energy, is found across many cultures, with prana in India, or ki in Japan, or mana in Hawaii. In qigong, we use movement, sound, visualization, intention, self-massage and breath to train the nature of our mind to unite with chi to have a positive healing effect on ourselves and on the world.

WHY PRACTICE QIGONG?

What if there is a practice, which studies show, has the ability to lower stress and decrease anxiety?  What if there is a technology that improves immune function, improves sleep quality, lowers blood pressure, and reduces inflammation? What if there is a practice that in a recent peer-reviewed article appears to aid in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of respiratory infections, including COVID-19?

Too good to be true, right? That’s what I originally thought, too. My background in public health says: show me the data.  Is this evidence-based?

There have been many studies including randomized controlled trials which have examined the effect of qigong on health.  For instance, a few studies have focused on perceived stress and anxiety following a period of qigong practice.  These studies suggested a desirable effect of qigong on perceived stress immediately following the program and the effect lasted for weeks beyond the practice. Many of the studies confirm what practitioners of qigong know which is that the practice can reduce stress and anxiety, improve immunity, and foster an enhanced sense of peace.
